Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that 20% of Americans over the age of 12 have a HSV-2 infection, women more commonly then men. US women have a 25% infection rate. Genetal herpes infections have increased with over 30% nationwide since the early 1980's, with the largest part of the increase located in the age group of 12-25.
There are several complementary alternative therapy methods and ointments you can use for handling an outbreak of genital herpes. Some relatively simple self-treatment and care may be the only thing you need in order to handle the discomfort of an outbreak of herpees. The pain involved can be handled by using a standard over-the-counter pain relief pill such as ibuprofen or maybe an aspirin. This may help you controlling the herpies symptoms.
Other treatment frequently recommended is to soak the infected area in warm water, although you should try and keep it dry in general. Sometimes it may be uncomfortable to use a towel for drying but then you can use a hairdryer instead to avoid the painful contact with the herpes infected area. Use pure cotton underwear as it handles body moisture much better than any sythetic.
There has been some scientific studies indicating that the use of nutrition supplements and herbal extracts actually can help, although not in all cases. A natural remedy that often comes up is the extract of the echinacea plant which is an immune system booster. The idea of strengthening the immune defence is if course that this will help combating the virus during an outbreak. British scientists compared two groups of patients, one treated with echinacea and the other with a placebo. The test ran under 6 months and the echinacea group consisted of 50 patients with genital herpies. In this particular study, there were not signs that the echinacea had any better effect than the placebo.
In another test, a propolis ointment (from honeybees) was tested for its claimed ability to speed up healing of the genital herpes sores. This was indeed shown to be the case, not only when compared to a placebo group of patients, but also when compared to a group treated with acyclovir. The propolis ointment was applied 4 times a day and after 10 days, it had healed the sores of 5 out of 6 of the patients. The comparison groups showed about 50% rate for the acyclovir and a bit less for placebo.
Prunella vulgaris, which is a non-poisonous mushroom, and Rozites Caperata (also known as gypsies mushrooms) contain active drugs that are capable of countering both the herplex simplex viral strains.
None of the treatments above have yet been approved for genetal herpes treatment (genital herpies) by the Food and Drug Administration. You can stil buy these products, not for use in treatment of genital herpes, but they are sold as nutritional complements.
Genital herpies (gential herpes) is a condition brougt on by an infection from the herpes simplex virus. It is a highly contagious condition while there is an active outbreak, which it fortunately is not most of the time between outbreaks of the genatal herpees. Treatment of genetal herpes symptoms signs can be done, although there is no known cure that will remove the underlying virus infection so even if the herpes infection is treated, it is likely to recur at a later stage.
